Setiap orang mengalami kelima complexes ini, karena setiap orang melalui tahap-tahap pengembangan yang sama. Semua complex itu normal selama tidak ada yang ekstrim.
Tahap claustral, adalah tahap di mana seseorang merasa aman dalam kandungan orang tuanya. Complexes yang terjadi di tahap ini adalah simple claustral complex dan anti-claustral atau egression. Simple claustral complex terjadi karena adanya keinginan untuk tetap kecil, hangat, berada di tempat gelap yang aman dan menyendiri. Orang-orang seperti ini cenderung fokus pada perasaan tidak aman dan tidak berdaya, sehingga hidup dalam ketakutan akan banyak hal. Sedangkan anti-claustral justru sebaliknya. Orang-orang seperti ini ingin bebas dari kandungan ibunya, takut terkurung dan mati lemas, karena itu mereka suka perubahan, hal-hal baru, perjalanan, tempat terbuka, udara segar.
Tahap oral, adalah tahap di mana seseorang sangat menikmati kegiatan menghisap susu atau jempol ketika sedang digendong. Complex pertama dalam tahap ini adalah oral succorance complex, yaitu perpaduan antara kegiatan mulut, kegiatan yang pasif, dan kebutuhan untuk didukung dan dilindungi. Perilaku yang ditunjukkan adalah menghisap, mencium, makan, minum, butuh kasih sayang, simpati, perlindungan, dan cinta. Complex kedua adalah oral aggression complex yang merupakan perpaduan mulut dengan perilaku agresif, yaitu menggigit, meludah, teriak, sarkasme. Complex ketiga adalah oral rejection complex, yaitu muntah, pilih-pilih makanan, makan sedikit, takut terjadi kontaminasi dari mulut (takut berciuman), suka menyendiri, dan tidak mau bergantung pada orang lain.
Tahap anal, yaitu tahap di mana seseorang menikmati kesenangan ketika buang air besar. Complexes dalam tahap ini adalah anal rejection complex dan anal retention complex. Anal rejection complex membuat seseorang suka akan hal-hal yang mirip dengan kotoran, yaitu lumpur, dll. Orang-orang ini kemungkinannya adalah jorok dan tidak teratur. Agresi juga bagian dari complex ini, yang ditunjukkan dengan membuang barang, menggunakan senjata api, merancang bom. Anal retention complex terlihat dari kesenangannya mengumpulkan barang, menabung, kebersihan, kerapihan, dan keteraturan.
Tahap urethral, yaitu tahap di mana seseorang menikmati kesenangan ketika buang air kecil. Complex dalam tahap ini adalah urethral complex atau icarius complex, berkaitan dengan ambisi yang berlebihan, self-esteem yang tidak tepat, perilaku berlebihan sehingga terlihat bodoh, ngompol, birahi, dan cinta diri sendiri.
